When are tooth extractions necessary?
Teeth, especially your adult ones, are supposed to be permanent. Sometimes, however, injury, illness, decay, or genetics make it so extraction is the best way to preserve the health and look of your smile.
Specific reasons you may need a tooth extracted include:
- Extra or crowded teeth
- Insufficient room for third molars (wisdom teeth)
- Impacted teeth
- Risk of infection from an unsuccessful root canal
- Risk of infection during an organ transplant or chemotherapy
- Severe gum (periodontal) disease
You may also need an extraction to restore a broken tooth.
What happens during tooth extractions?
Extractions may be simple or surgical, depending on the nature of your affected tooth. Smile Bright Dental even offers same-day extractions when time is of the essence. Extractions are performed while your mouth is numbed or, sometimes, while you’re under sedation.
Simple extractions
A simple extraction is done on a tooth that’s intact and fully erupted from the gumline. During this procedure, your dentist loosens the targeted tooth using a tool called an elevator and coaxes it out using dental forceps.
Surgical extraction
If you have a problematic tooth that’s broken off at the gum line or is impacted, meaning it hasn’t erupted through the gums, you require a surgical extraction. During this type of extraction, your dentist makes an incision in the gumline to access the tooth.
The tooth may need to be broken up before extraction and surrounding bone removed if you have a deep infection.
What is the healing process after a tooth extraction?
For most healthy patients, the healing process after a tooth extraction takes 1-2 weeks. During this time, new gum tissue and bone grow into the space left by your missing tooth. Chewing and dental hygiene may be uncomfortable during this time.
The team gives you a thorough post-extraction care plan and specific instructions on how to care for the area affected by the extraction. Surgical extractions are more complex and may require extra care to avoid infection or complications.
If you have teeth that are in need of extraction, call Smile Bright Dental for assistance. The friendly staff will help you set up an appointment by phone or online.
